Colour My World
Imagine you’re standing in the studio of aspiring young artist Vincent. Something doesn’t seem quite right. Where there should be colour and creativity there is nothing but dull grey… You explore the studio, searching for clues that you hope will help Vincent recover the spark and the passion he once had for his art. Slowly, frustratingly at times, you pursue hunches, uncover clues, crack codes, open locks and solve puzzles. Each new step brings exciting new tints into the room. Sixty-two minutes later, the somber grey has gone, and the room is filled with bright, beautiful colours.
Steph, Helen, Simone and I turned this imaginary experience into reality this week when we went to Escape Artists for a team-building event. After we completed the final puzzle, we all stood quietly for a moment, soaking up the beauty and savouring the satisfaction of having worked together to help Vincent recover his mojo and fill the world with new colour. It’s fair to say that although we all made a contribution, Simone was the star performer. And, in the interests of full disclosure, a few expletives were uttered when new clues suddenly and noisily appeared!
On the bike ride home the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:14 (The Message) tumbled around in my mind. “You’re there to be light, bringing out the God colours in the world.” I felt a rising gratitude for the unique array of God-colours I can see in our staff team, in our Ilam Baptist family, and in the lives of so many other people in my life. I look out the office window while writing this musing, and there’s a double rainbow arching across the sky!
