Shout Out to the Mums.
‘Mum, muum, muuum. I did it. I did it.’ My three-year-old grandsom Jonty barreled across the room, held up his partly built lego tractor and proudly thrust it in front of his mum. Beth stopped peeling the carrots she was prepping for dinner. She crouched down on weary legs, took the emerging toy in hand, and carefully examined it. “Wow Jonty, that’s amazing. You’re so clever.” She smiled at him, tussled his hair, and gave him a warm hug.
I teared up a little watching her. Only a few minutes earlier she had been saying how exhausted and overwhelmed she was with the demands of home and work. Here she was digging deep to pour some life-giving love into her wee man’s heart.
Jonty did a little Tigger jump of delight and raced back to the lounge to work alongside me on his project. We added some headlights, a bonnet, and a steering wheel to the tractor. He then jumped up again and raced straight back into the kitchen. ‘Mum, muum, muuum. I did it. I did it!’ Beth put down the peeler and bent over once again to look into his little eyes.
In the world of mothers, life, like little Jonty, keeps rushing at you. The needs are never all met, the task list is never finished, the children always ask more of you, and the tank is often empty. There is often little to no time for rest and refreshment, and you often feel like a fraud or a failure.
Many mums don’t ask for respect, gratitude, or support. All of them, however, need it. Preferably in daily doses. Can I suggest you make some time this week to notice, thank and support some mums in your world. Offer a word of encouragement, change a nappy, drop in a meal, mind a child, share a hug, give them some flowers. Let them know that they too are seen and loved.
“Jesus saw his mother there. He also saw the disciple he loved standing nearby. Jesus said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son.” He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, the disciple took her into his home.” John 19:26-27
