Musing

Last semester I battled my way through a paper on the Pentateuch. Last week I had the opportunity to preach about Saul and David from 1 Samuel 17: 55 – 19: 24.

It has been an opportunity for me to wrestle with parts of the bible I find really tricky to know what to do with. God seems mean and violent and many, many people (who are God’s image bearers) die as the Jewish nation is formed and founded as God’s chosen people.

One resource I have found really helpful is the podcast ‘The Bible For Normal People’ with Peter Enns and Jared Byas, especially episode 7 – Teaching the Bible to Your Children. I found it really helpful for me personally, as well as challenging how I engage with Emma and Rachael and the bible.

This podcast talks about helping our children become faith explorers rather than dutiful soldiers who automatically can quote the ‘right’ texts. The bible is not a videotaped history but rather writers and preachers interpretation of history, it is already being filtered through a way of looking at the world. We can help our children ask ‘what is the value of this story’ or ‘why is this story being told?’ I found this and other podcasts in this series really interesting and I wonder if you’ve listened to it or are interested in listening to it and discussing how it applies to our faith and how we give our children opportunities to develop faith for themselves? Let me know if you’re keen. 😊
